Formula Feeding Guidance and Support

Making the Right Feeding Choice for Your Family

Feeding your baby is one of the most personal parenting decisions you will make. While breastfeeding is encouraged when possible, formula feeding is a safe and healthy option for many families.

Your baby can thrive with the right nutritional support and guidance.

Types of Infant Formula

Most babies do well on cow’s milk based formula, but other options include:

  • Soy based formula
  • Sensitive or lactose reduced formula
  • Hypoallergenic formula for allergies

Always discuss formula selection with your provider during your Postpartum Care visits.

How Much and How Often to Feed

Newborns typically eat every two to three hours. As your baby grows, feeding intervals may extend.

General guidelines:

  • First few days: 1 to 2 ounces per feeding
  • By 1 month: 3 to 4 ounces per feeding
  • By 6 months: 6 to 8 ounces per feeding

Every baby is different. Hunger cues are often more reliable than strict schedules.

Safe Formula Preparation

Proper preparation is essential to prevent illness:

  • Wash hands before preparing bottles
  • Use clean, sterilized bottles
  • Follow mixing instructions exactly
  • Discard unused formula after one hour

Never dilute formula to make it last longer. This can disrupt your baby’s electrolyte balance.
