Your Pregnancy: What to Expect During the Second Trimester

The second trimester of your pregnancy includes weeks 13 through 27. This is considered the honeymoon period because it can be a more pleasant experience. Most women report greater emotional balance, little or no nausea, and the return of their sex drive. This is also the time when you will begin to notice baby’s movements.

Common Second Trimester Changes

You will notice some physical changes during the second trimester. It’s not unusual to experience:

  • Enlarged Breasts

Your breasts will continue to grow in preparation for the baby. Make sure you wear a support bra to stay comfortable during this period.

  • Bleeding Gums

Around 50% of pregnant women report swollen gums due to hormonal changes. This makes the gums tender and more prone to bleeding. Dental hygiene should not be neglected. Instead, try switching to a softer toothbrush.

  • Nosebleeds & Congestion

Hormones can cause changes in mucus membrane lining, which can lead to swelling. When this happens, you may notice congestion or nosebleeds. Saline drops or a humidifier are safe ways to reduce nasal discomfort.

  • Unusual Hair Growth

Many women notice unusual hair growth as a result of pregnancy hormones. The hair on their head grows thicker and strands may appear on arms, face, or back. The safest way to deal with cosmetic concerns is by tweezing or shaving.

  • Headaches

Headaches are a common side effect of pregnancy. The best way to prevent them is to get enough rest and employ relaxation techniques. Talk to your obstetrician about relief options if you have trouble managing the pain.

  • Urination Changes

The uterus rises from the pelvic cavity during your second trimester which can create the need to urinate more frequently. This is usually heightened in the last trimester.
