Laparoscopy

A laparoscopy is a procedure used by doctors to diagnose and treat endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, and pelvic inflammatory disease. The surgery is minimally invasive and requires small incisions in the abdomen.
After the incision, carbon dioxide is injected into the abdomen to expand the area. This steps helps the doctor view the area more easily. If the procudure is a gynecological laparasocpy, your doctor will inject dye into the cervix to view the fallopian tubes.
Using a small video camera, doctors can see inside the pelvis and abdomen. Depending on the needs of the patient, a small piece of tissue may be taken and biopsed.
The surgery is outpatient, and recovery time is mininal. Your doctor will schedule a follow-up visit at which point the stitches will be removed.
