Second Trimester of Pregnancy

Second Trimester of Pregnancy: Milestones & Care

The second trimester is often considered the most comfortable and enjoyable phase of pregnancy. For many expectant mothers, early symptoms like morning sickness begin to fade, and energy levels naturally start to return.

Spanning weeks 13 through 26, this trimester is an exciting period of rapid growth and memorable milestones—including the opportunity to find out your baby’s sex. At the Women’s Health and Menopause Center in West Bloomfield, our board-certified OB/GYNs provide dedicated, compassionate prenatal care to keep you and your baby thriving.

Essential Second Trimester Milestones & Testing

During your routine prenatal visits to our Oakland County office, we monitor your progress and perform key preventative screenings, including:

  • Risk Evaluation for Neural Tube Defects (Weeks 15–17): A simple, routine blood screening to check your baby’s early developmental health.
  • The Anatomy Ultrasound (After Week 19): An exciting and detailed, head-to-toe imaging scan to evaluate your baby’s structural growth. If you wish to know whether you are having a boy or a girl, we can safely reveal the sex during this visit!
  • Routine Screening Labs (Weeks 24–28): Essential blood tests to check for gestational diabetes and anemia, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the remainder of your pregnancy.
  • Preventative Vaccinations: We provide the seasonal flu shot and the Tdap vaccine (which passes vital whooping cough protection directly to your baby before birth).
