Introduction

The microbiome—your body’s unique ecosystem of trillions of bacteria—plays a surprisingly powerful role in your overall health. But for women, its impact goes beyond digestion. Research now shows that the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut can influence your mood, metabolism, and even your fertility.

Mood and the Gut-Brain Axis

Have you ever had “a gut feeling”? That’s not just intuition—it’s biology. The gut and brain communicate constantly through what’s called the gut-brain axis. This connection is powered by the vagus nerve and influenced heavily by gut bacteria.

When your microbiome is in balance, it helps regulate neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, which directly affect mood, sleep, and stress response. In fact, up to 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. An imbalanced gut can contribute to anxiety, depression, and brain fog.

Metabolism and Weight Management

Your gut bacteria also influence how efficiently your body breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and stores fat. Certain microbial strains are associated with better blood sugar control, reduced inflammation, and a healthier weight.

Women with an imbalanced microbiome may experience bloating, fatigue, cravings, and difficulty losing weight—even with diet and exercise. Conditions like PCOS and insulin resistance are also closely linked to gut health.

Fertility and Hormonal Harmony

A lesser-known role of the microbiome is its impact on reproductive health. The gut and vaginal microbiomes are interconnected and help regulate estrogen metabolism—essential for regular ovulation and hormonal balance.

When the microbiome is disrupted, it can contribute to issues like irregular cycles, PMS, infertility, and even increased risk of miscarriage. A balanced gut supports hormonal stability, improves response to fertility treatments, and may even reduce risk of endometriosis and PCOS complications.

How to Support Your Microbiome

Eat a diverse, fiber-rich diet with prebiotics (onions, garlic, bananas).

Include fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kefir.

Consider a high-quality probiotic—but choose one designed for women.

Limit processed foods, artificial sweeteners, and unnecessary antibiotics.

Manage stress—cortisol disrupts gut flora.

Final Thoughts

Supporting your microbiome isn’t just a digestion issue—it’s a whole-body wellness strategy. For women navigating mood swings, metabolism shifts, or fertility concerns, gut health is a vital piece of the puzzle.

Stress in small amounts can be a good thing. Stress can cause us to complete tasks with a higher sense of urgency when approaching a deadline. Chronic stress, on the other hand, can negatively impact physical and mental health. Stress is more likely to cause depression and anxiety in women than in men.

The top offenders that cause stress in women are work, family, and or financial stress. There are many symptoms of stress. Minor symptoms of stress can include insomnia, upset stomach, and headache. Major symptoms of stress can include but are not limited to; difficulty sleeping, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of energy, lack of focus, loss of interest in usual hobbies, and social isolation.

Women with higher levels of stress are more likely to run into fertility problems and often have difficulty getting pregnant. Chronic stress in women can cause irregular periods and severe Premenstrual Syndrome. Chronic stress can raise your heart rate and blood pressure, which can lead to heart attack or stroke.

Stress triggers a hormone in the body called cortisol. Women who have higher levels of stress produce more cortisol which causes overeating and increased fat storage. This can lead to obesity and diabetes in women. Gastrointestinal distress such as upset stomach, gas, bloating, and excess acid can lead to Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Many women are overworked and burnt out. There are several methods to cope with stress. Creating a daily plan or to-do list can help. Most importantly, it is important to ask for help and to practice self-care. Techniques such as deep breathing, journaling, spending time outdoors, counseling, spending time with loved ones, or exercise can all help cope with stress. If you are unable to cope with stress, you are not alone. Talking to a professional can help. Tell your doctor.

Timing is important when trying to become pregnant. While there is a common process involved, it can vary from one woman to the next. That’s why it is essential to understand what’s happening and when it occurs in order to time reproduction. How do you know when you are most fertile while trying to get pregnant?

Are You Ovulating Yet?

Peak fertility is based on when you ovulate. This is when the egg leaves the ovaries and moves through the fallopian tubes, where it is ready to be impregnated by sperm. Ovulation usually happens around halfway through your cycle. If your cycle lasts for 28 days, then ovulation will occur around the 14th day. It usually lasts between 12 and 24 hours.

When Should I Try to Become Pregnant?

Your most fertile days are going to be those right before, during, or right after ovulation. You may still get pregnant outside of this time frame, but it is your best opportunity. You can also look for signs and indications that ovulation is occurring.

Track Your Cycle with a Calendar – Start tracking your cycle with a calendar. This will allow you to identify your typical cycle length and show any patterns that might help. You can also record this information and share it with your doctor.

Monitor Changes in Your Body – Your body changes as you go through your menstrual cycle. The ovaries produce estrogen which leads to the release of the egg. Your body temperature will rise during this time. You will also notice an increase in a sticky fluid called cervical mucus.

Ovulation Pain – Some women describe a twinge of pain that is felt in their side when ovulation happens. It’s important to note that if you notice this pain, it means you are nearing the end of your peak fertility window for that cycle.

Whether you have been trying to become pregnant or are only thinking about it, you should schedule an appointment with your obstetrician. We can help you learn more about the process and what to do to increase your chances of fertilization. Contact Women’s Health West Bloomfield offices today to schedule your consultation.

About 12 to 13 couples out of 100 in the United States will have trouble conceiving. Infertility means that you have had unprotected, regular sex for at least six months to a year and can’t get pregnant. Other factors may apply as well, like age. Some people think that pregnancy will occur after a few attempts, but this is not necessarily true. So how do you know when you need to keep trying or when you may be infertile?

Infertility Signs in Women

There are many causes of infertility. The following list includes common infertility signs in women. You may be infertile if you:

Have never had a period or if your periods have suddenly stopped

Experience painful periods with pelvic and/or back pain and cramping

Have irregular periods with a different number of days between each cycle

Have bleeding that’s heavier or lighter than usual

Hormone problems can cause infertility. Hormones may be the cause if you also notice:

Acne or other skin changes

A change in your sex drive

Dark hair that grows on the chin, chest, and lips

Thinning hair or hair loss

Weight gain

Should I Talk to an Obstetrician About Infertility?

You need to keep your OB/GYN in the loop when it comes to your health. You should have a consultation as soon as you decide you want to become pregnant. They can provide advice and discuss the possibility of infertility or other related concerns. Contact Women’s Health in West Bloomfield today to schedule an appointment.

When most people think about birth and renewal, they usually think about spring with its flowers and new baby animals. While that sounds charming, it’s actually winter that is the best time to try to conceive.

Excessive Heat Affects Sperm Production

While the rest of the body may feel the chill of winter, sperm are quite happy without the excessive heat. Men are advised to avoid heat around the testicles when trying to conceive. A lower temperature is needed for optimum sperm production. If it’s too warm, it can slow production and cause a higher number of abnormal sperm.

The ideal environment for sperm is four degrees cooler than the body. A number of things can cause that temperature to go up, like:

Wearing briefs instead of loose boxers

Wearing tight-fitting clothing

Sitting with a warm laptop on your lap

Relaxing in a hot tub or sauna

Fever and other health issues

Higher Testosterone Means Higher Fertility

Testosterone levels are at their highest during the fall and winter months. That leads to a rising libido. A stronger sex drive combined with more testosterone means higher fertility and a better chance at conceiving. Studies found that sperm concentration is lowest in August through October and then picks up again as the temperature cools off.

Birth patterns also prove that winter is a good time to make babies. November and December were identified as the most fertile months, with the highest number of births nine months later. Trying to conceive this winter? Schedule an appointment with your Women’s Health OB/GYN.
