Supporting Breastfeeding Mothers at Home and in the Workplace

Breastfeeding may involve one mother and one baby, but successful support often depends on an entire household, care team, and workplace.

Encouragement matters, but practical assistance is often more helpful than simply telling a mother to continue.

Support at Home

Partners and family members can help by:

Bringing water and meals

Changing diapers

Burping and settling the baby

Cleaning pump parts and bottles

Managing laundry

Limiting visitors

Protecting time for sleep

Attending lactation appointments

Offering reassurance without pressure

A breastfeeding mother should not be expected to manage every feeding and every household responsibility.

Avoid Pressure and Judgment

Comments such as “just try harder” or “breast is best” can increase guilt when a mother is experiencing pain, low supply, exhaustion, or mental health concerns.

Helpful language includes:

“How can I support you?”

“Would you like help finding a lactation consultant?”

“Your health matters too.”

“We can adjust the plan.”

“Feeding the baby safely is the priority.”

Support should continue even if the family chooses pumping, combination feeding, donor milk, or formula.

Preparing to Return to Work

Before returning, mothers may benefit from:

Practicing with the pump

Introducing a bottle or cup when appropriate

Discussing feeding with the childcare provider

Identifying a private pumping location

Planning milk storage

Creating a backup plan

Learning how to clean pump parts safely

Whenever possible, pumping frequency should roughly reflect the baby’s usual feeding pattern to support milk supply and comfort.

Workplace Protections

The federal PUMP Act generally requires covered employers to provide reasonable break time and a clean, private location that is not a bathroom for expressing milk for up to one year after a child’s birth. Specific coverage and exceptions may vary, so employees with questions should consult current U.S. Department of Labor guidance or qualified legal counsel.

Employers can offer additional support through:

Flexible scheduling

Reliable break coverage

Access to refrigeration

A comfortable chair and electrical outlet

Remote or hybrid options when possible

Respectful communication

Written lactation policies

ACOG recognizes workplace break time, private pumping space, lactation programs, and supportive public policies as important factors in helping mothers continue breastfeeding.

Supporting Mental and Physical Health

Returning to work can bring conflicting emotions. Mothers may feel sadness, relief, anxiety, guilt, or a combination of feelings.

Persistent depression, panic, intrusive thoughts, inability to sleep when the baby sleeps, or difficulty functioning should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Breast pain, recurrent engorgement, fever, or a sudden supply change also deserves attention.

Support Makes a Difference

A breastfeeding plan is more sustainable when the mother has rest, time, privacy, respect, and access to professional help.

Women’s Health and Menopause Center’s prenatal birthing classes help families prepare for feeding, postpartum recovery, and the early weeks at home.

For pregnancy or postpartum guidance, schedule an appointment with our West Bloomfield women’s health team.
