Sexual desire naturally changes throughout life. Some women notice changes during pregnancy, after childbirth, during stressful periods, or around menopause. Others experience a persistent loss of interest that feels distressing or affects a relationship.

Low libido is not always caused by hormones, and it is not automatically a sign that something is wrong with a relationship.

What Does Low Libido Mean?

Libido refers to sexual interest or desire. There is no universal amount of desire that is considered normal.

Some people think about sex frequently, while others experience desire only after affectionate touch or sexual activity has begun. Desire can also change based on health, stress, relationship circumstances, and life stage.

Low desire becomes a medical concern when the change causes personal distress or negatively affects well-being.

Hormonal Changes

Estrogen levels can change during pregnancy, breastfeeding, perimenopause, and menopause. These shifts may contribute to vaginal dryness, discomfort, sleep disruption, or changes in arousal.

Lower estrogen does not affect every woman in the same way. Testosterone and other hormones may also play a role, but sexual desire is rarely explained by a single laboratory result.

Pain and Vaginal Dryness

When sex hurts, it is understandable to lose interest in it.

Pain may be related to:

Vaginal dryness

Menopause-related tissue changes

Pelvic floor tension

Endometriosis

Fibroids

Ovarian cysts

Infection

Vulvar skin conditions

Previous pelvic surgery

Childbirth-related injury

Treating the source of pain may improve both comfort and desire.

Stress, Sleep, and Mental Health

Exhaustion and chronic stress can make sexual interest difficult. Parenting, caregiving, work demands, body image concerns, and lack of privacy may all affect libido.

Depression, anxiety, past trauma, and relationship conflict can also contribute. These concerns deserve compassionate care rather than blame.

Medications and Medical Conditions

Certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, hormonal treatments, and other medications may affect desire, arousal, or orgasm.

Thyroid disease, diabetes, anemia, chronic pain, neurologic conditions, and sleep disorders may also contribute to sexual changes.

Do not stop a prescription medication without speaking with the prescribing clinician. A different dose or medication may sometimes help.

Relationship and Communication Factors

Desire may decrease when someone feels emotionally disconnected, pressured, criticized, or responsible for carrying most household and caregiving duties.

Open communication can help partners understand that low desire is not necessarily rejection. Couples counseling or sex therapy may be useful when communication has become difficult.

How Is Low Libido Evaluated?

An OB/GYN may ask about:

When the change began

Pain or dryness

Menstrual and menopause symptoms

Pregnancy or postpartum changes

Medications

Sleep and stress

Mental health

Relationship concerns

Past medical conditions

Testing may be recommended when symptoms suggest a thyroid condition, anemia, diabetes, or another health concern.

Treatment Depends on the Cause

Support may include lubricants, vaginal moisturizers, pelvic floor therapy, medication changes, menopause treatment, counseling, sex therapy, or treatment of an underlying medical condition.

There is no single solution for every woman. The goal is not to meet someone else’s standard for sexual frequency. The goal is to improve comfort, well-being, and satisfaction based on the patient’s own priorities.

Women’s Health and Menopause Center provides a respectful setting where women can discuss libido, painful sex, menopause symptoms, and other intimate concerns without embarrassment.
