Breastfeeding is one way to nourish and comfort a newborn. It can offer meaningful health benefits for both babies and mothers, although every family’s feeding journey is different.

Breastfeeding should be supported without creating shame or pressure. Formula and combination feeding are also appropriate options when needed or chosen.

Benefits for Babies

Breast milk provides nutrition that changes as a baby grows. It contains fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and immune-supporting components.

Breastfeeding is associated with a lower risk of certain conditions, including:

Ear infections

Gastrointestinal infections

Severe lower respiratory illness

Sudden infant death syndrome

Type 1 diabetes

Obesity

Asthma in some populations

Breast milk also transfers antibodies from mother to baby, helping support the developing immune system.

Benefits for Mothers

Breastfeeding may support maternal health by reducing the risk of:

Breast cancer

Ovarian cancer

Type 2 diabetes

High blood pressure

Feeding also releases hormones that help the uterus contract after delivery.

Some mothers value breastfeeding for convenience, closeness, and the ability to comfort a baby without preparing a bottle. Others find feeding physically or emotionally difficult. Both experiences are valid.

Bonding Is Not Limited to Breastfeeding

Skin-to-skin contact, eye contact, holding, responsive feeding, and comforting all help build connection.

Parents who use formula or expressed milk can develop the same close, secure relationship with their babies. Bonding is created through consistent, loving care, not through one specific feeding method.

How Long Should You Breastfeed?

Professional recommendations support exclusive breastfeeding for approximately the first six months when possible, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced.

Personal goals may be shorter or longer. Medical concerns, milk supply, work responsibilities, mental health, medication needs, and infant health may influence the plan.

Any amount of breast milk can be meaningful, but feeding success should not be measured only by duration.

Breastfeeding Support Matters

Early support can help with latch, positioning, milk transfer, pumping, engorgement, and nipple pain.

During pregnancy, consider:

Taking a breastfeeding class

Discussing feeding goals with your provider

Learning about pumps and insurance benefits

Identifying a lactation consultant

Talking with family about practical support

Women’s Health and Menopause Center’s prenatal birthing classes include information about breast and bottle feeding, postpartum recovery, and preparing for the early weeks at home.

Your Feeding Plan Can Change

A feeding plan made during pregnancy may need to change after delivery. Flexibility is not failure.

Your health, recovery, sleep, and emotional well-being are also important. Talk with your obstetrician, pediatrician, or lactation professional when feeding becomes painful, stressful, or difficult.

Learn more about our obstetric care or schedule a prenatal appointment.

Making the Right Feeding Choice for Your Family

Feeding your baby is one of the most personal parenting decisions you will make. While breastfeeding is encouraged when possible, formula feeding is a safe and healthy option for many families.

Your baby can thrive with the right nutritional support and guidance.

Types of Infant Formula

Most babies do well on cow’s milk based formula, but other options include:

Soy based formula

Sensitive or lactose reduced formula

Hypoallergenic formula for allergies

Always discuss formula selection with your provider during your Postpartum Care visits.

How Much and How Often to Feed

Newborns typically eat every two to three hours. As your baby grows, feeding intervals may extend.

General guidelines:

First few days: 1 to 2 ounces per feeding

By 1 month: 3 to 4 ounces per feeding

By 6 months: 6 to 8 ounces per feeding

Every baby is different. Hunger cues are often more reliable than strict schedules.

Safe Formula Preparation

Proper preparation is essential to prevent illness:

Wash hands before preparing bottles

Use clean, sterilized bottles

Follow mixing instructions exactly

Discard unused formula after one hour

Never dilute formula to make it last longer. This can disrupt your baby’s electrolyte balance.

Supporting Emotional Wellbeing

Some mothers feel guilt or pressure around feeding choices. It is important to remember that your baby needs a healthy, supported parent.

At Women’s Health & Menopause Center, we offer compassionate postpartum guidance and encourage open conversations about infant feeding.

If you are navigating feeding decisions or postpartum recovery, visit our Postpartum Support page for additional resources.
