Anxiety about discomfort can make an in-office gynecologic procedure feel overwhelming. Women’s Health and Menopause Center now offers nitrous oxide as a comfort option for many selected procedures.

Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide works quickly and allows the patient to remain awake and responsive.

Which Procedures May Qualify?

Nitrous oxide may be available for procedures such as:

IUD insertion

Endometrial biopsy

Colposcopy

Select hysteroscopy procedures

Availability depends on the specific procedure, your medical history, and your provider’s recommendation. Ask about nitrous oxide when scheduling rather than waiting until the day of your visit.

Women’s Health and Menopause Center offers nitrous oxide as a fast-acting option intended to reduce anxiety and discomfort while allowing patients to remain awake and in control.

What Does Nitrous Oxide Feel Like?

Patients may experience:

A sense of relaxation

Reduced anxiety

Lightness or warmth

Tingling

Less awareness of discomfort

You continue breathing on your own and can communicate with the clinical team throughout the procedure.

The experience varies. Nitrous oxide may improve comfort, but it does not guarantee that every sensation will disappear. Local anesthetic or other pain-management options may still be recommended.

How Is It Administered?

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask or mouthpiece. Your care team will explain how to breathe and what to expect.

The medication begins working quickly. Once the procedure is complete, the nitrous oxide is stopped and its effects generally begin wearing off within minutes.

Your clinical team will monitor your response and confirm when it is appropriate for you to leave.

Is Nitrous Oxide Right for Everyone?

Your provider will review your health history and the planned procedure. Mention:

Current pregnancy possibility

Respiratory conditions

Vitamin B12 concerns

Recent illness

Medications

Previous anesthesia reactions

Claustrophobia or mask-related anxiety

You will receive instructions specific to your appointment, including whether you may eat beforehand and whether transportation arrangements are needed.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Before your appointment:

Ask what the procedure involves

Discuss pain-management choices

Follow food and medication instructions

Bring questions

Tell the team if you feel anxious

Confirm expected recovery and restrictions

Women’s Health and Menopause Center prioritizes shared decision-making during common gynecologic procedures. Your clinician will explain why the procedure is recommended, what will happen, and what to expect afterward.

To ask whether nitrous oxide may be appropriate for your visit, contact our West Bloomfield office.

The in-office hysteroscopy is an attractive option for patients and doctors. This minimally invasive procedure has proven accurate when diagnosing abnormalities in the endocervical canal and endometrial cavity. This procedure lets doctors examine the uterus to diagnose abnormal bleeding and, in some cases, provide treatment.

What Is An Endosee?

An Endosee is a hand-held device that is used during a hysteroscopy. It’s compact and portable, making it ideal for smaller spaces. It includes an LCD screen that gives doctors a clear image. It is capable of taking still photos and videos and is equipped with a channel for fluid infusion.

During the procedure, a thin tube is passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. Once inside, a small camera will begin transmitting images that your doctor can review. This provides a detailed picture of any abnormalities.

Benefits of In-Office Hysteroscopy

Many gynecologists will perform a hysteroscopy in the office. This usually takes less than 30 minutes when diagnosing and one to two hours when operating. What are the benefits of in-office hysteroscopies?

The office is often a more relaxed setting for the patient.

Coming to the office may be more convenient for the patient.

It is more economical to perform the procedure.

Do I Need An In-Office Hysteroscopy?

If you experience abnormal bleeding, then a hysteroscopy may be able to help. The only way to know for sure is to see a gynecologist. Contact your Women’s Health and Menopause Center OBGYN today to schedule an appointment.
