Congratulations on your pregnancy journey! The first trimester marks the beginning of an incredible and life-changing experience. However, it can also bring about a range of physical and emotional changes that may catch you off guard. Understanding what to expect during these initial weeks can help alleviate concerns and empower you on this exciting journey.

During the first trimester, your body undergoes significant transformations to accommodate the growing life within you. From morning sickness to extreme fatigue, each woman’s experience is unique, but there are some common symptoms to be aware of:

Morning Sickness: Nausea and vomiting, often referred to as morning sickness, can occur at any time of the day. While it can be challenging to deal with, try eating small, frequent meals and staying hydrated to help manage symptoms.

Fatigue: Your body is working hard to nurture and support your growing baby, which can leave you feeling exhausted. Don’t hesitate to listen to your body and rest when needed.

Mood Swings: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to mood swings and heightened emotions. Remember to communicate openly with your partner and healthcare provider about how you’re feeling.

Breast Tenderness: Increased levels of hormones can cause your breasts to become tender and swollen. Invest in a supportive bra to help alleviate discomfort.

Frequent Urination: As your uterus expands, it puts pressure on your bladder, leading to more frequent trips to the bathroom. Stay hydrated but be prepared for increased restroom breaks.

It’s essential to attend regular prenatal appointments with your obstetrician to monitor both your health and the development of your baby. Your healthcare provider can offer guidance, support, and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Remember, every pregnancy is different, and it’s okay to seek support when needed. Embrace this time of change and look forward to the beautiful journey ahead!

Having a baby can be an exciting time, but it can also be very scary for the first-time mom. Your body will change, and you may not be prepared for what’s to come. Learning more about the process can lower stress and help you enjoy a happy pregnancy.

What Is the First Trimester?

Trimesters are measured starting from the first day of your last period, spanning a total of 40 weeks. The first trimester starts with week one and goes through week 12, or approximately three months total. During this time, your baby will begin to grow buds that turn into tiny legs and arms.

What Will Happen to My Body During the First Trimester?

Every woman is unique and will experience pregnancy in various ways. Don’t be alarmed if your situation seems different from someone else’s. You may be glowing and healthy during the first few months, or you may feel miserable.

Once you are pregnant, you may notice constipation, bloating and cramps. You may feel moody and tired with the need to urinate more frequently. Some women also experience soreness in the breasts and nausea or vomiting. 25% of women will notice light spotting very early on.

What If I Think Something Is Wrong?

If you notice significant bleeding, sharp abdominal pains, or other symptoms between doctor visits that seem abnormal, contact your obstetrician right away.

If you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, make an appointment with your Women’s Health and Medical Center OB/GYN today.
