Urinary tract infections (UTI) are a common problem that many women experience throughout their lives. Some experts believe that one in two women will develop a UTI at least once. This condition is caused by bacteria from the anus that makes its way into the urethra and bladder. This is why women are advised to wipe from front to back.

Do I Have a UTI?

Women are at a high risk of developing UTIs. If you are a woman, how can you tell when you have an infection? The most common symptoms include:

• Frequent urge to urinate that produces only a small amount of urine
• Burning sensation experienced while urinating
• Pressure or pain located in the back or lower abdomen
• Urine that smells strange or looks cloudy, dark, or bloody
• Shaky or tired feelings

If you also experience chills or fever, then the UTI may have reached your kidneys. You should seek the advice of a doctor to get rid of the infection and prevent future symptoms or spreading.

Urinary Tract Infection Treatment

After a urine test, your gynecologist can verify the presence of an infection. You will most likely be prescribed an antibiotic to kill the bacteria. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and take all of the prescription to ensure that the problem is completely cured. Drink plenty of water to help flush the bacteria out. A pain medication may also be provided to help manage symptoms.
