Breastfeeding provides numerous benefits for both mother and baby, but it can also come with challenges. At our OBGYN clinic, we are dedicated to supporting new mothers on their breastfeeding journey. Here are some essential tips to help you succeed.

Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding offers many advantages, including:

Nutritional Benefits: Breast milk contains the perfect balance of nutrients for your baby.

Immune Support: Breast milk is rich in antibodies that help protect your baby from infections.

Bonding: Breastfeeding promotes bonding between mother and baby through close physical contact.

Health Benefits for Mothers: Breastfeeding can reduce the risk of certain cancers, help with postpartum weight loss, and delay the return of menstruation.

Getting Started

Initial Latching: Ensure your baby latches onto the breast properly. A good latch is crucial for effective feeding and preventing nipple pain.

Feeding on Demand: Feed your baby whenever they show signs of hunger. This can be 8-12 times in 24 hours, especially in the early weeks.

Comfortable Position: Find a comfortable position for breastfeeding, whether it’s the cradle hold, football hold, or side-lying position.

Overcoming Common Challenges

Sore Nipples: Ensure proper latch and use nipple creams or breast milk to soothe soreness.

Engorgement: Frequent feeding and expressing milk can relieve engorgement.

Low Milk Supply: Maintain a regular feeding schedule, stay hydrated, and consult a lactation specialist if needed.

Support Resources

Lactation Consultants: Our clinic offers access to lactation consultants who can provide personalized guidance and support.

Support Groups: Joining a breastfeeding support group can provide encouragement and practical advice from other mothers.

Breastfeeding is a rewarding experience that benefits both you and your baby. If you encounter challenges, remember that support is available. Our clinic is here to help you every step of the way, ensuring a positive breastfeeding journey.

Experts recommend breast milk as the best nutritional choice for babies. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months after birth.

Breast milk provides the nutrients a baby needs to grow and thrive. It also helps fight infections, eases digestion, enhances emotional bonding, improves intellectual development, reduces risks of certain infections and diseases, and is free and convenient.

Some mothers cannot or do not want to breastfeed. This may depend on medical situations, lifestyle, and personal preferences. For women in these categories, formula feeding is a healthy alternative. Formula provides the nutrients that babies need to grow.

Breastfeeding vs. formula feeding

Breast milk remains the gold standard for newborns. It has the right balance of nutrients that your baby needs. On the other hand, commercial infant formulas do not contain antibodies needed to boost immunity and fight infections. Breast milk is also easier to digest than formula. Formula-fed babies may have more gas and harder bowel movements than breastfed babies. Also, breast milk is free, readily available, and at the right temperature. However, formula can be costly and requires preparation under sterile conditions. Formula feeding also has its pros. It is more convenient, flexible, and increases partner involvement in the feeding of the baby. Formula-fed babies are fed less frequently than breastfed babies. In addition, mothers do not have to worry about their diet, medications, or health conditions if they opt for formula feeding.

It is your choice

How you feed your child is your choice. Even if it was not a convenient choice, do not feed any negative emotions. Instead, focus on caring for and nourishing your baby. If necessary, you can share your feelings with your healthcare provider. No matter your choice, ensure you do the best for yourself and your child.

Some causes of cancer are genetic, which means that they are inherited through genes. Breast cancer can be hereditary, however, most cases are NOT. There may be lifestyle changes that you can make right now that will reduce your risk of developing the disease later in life.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking increases your risk of breast cancer. The effects are even stronger in premenopausal women. Your best bet is to not start smoking. If you already smoke, now is the time to quit.

Enjoy Alcohol in Moderation

There is nothing wrong with drinking a glass of wine or beer every now and again. Excessive intake can increase your risk of health conditions like cancer. A good approach is to limit yourself to one drink or less per day.

Maintain Healthy Weight

Healthy weight is a great way to avoid many medical conditions, including cancer. The heavier you are, the higher your chances of developing this and other diseases. This is even more important for older women, including those who are postmenopausal.

Breastfeed Your Baby

According to Lyda Hill Cancer Prevention Center’s health education specialist Rachel King, “Research shows mothers who breastfeed lower their risk of pre- and post-menopausal breast cancer.” She recommends breastfeeding for longer than the suggested six months for maximum benefit.

Limit Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy can be helpful for a number of conditions, but it can also raise your risk of cancer. Limit the duration and dose of this treatment option. Patients who underwent hormone therapy for over three to five years had an increased risk of breast cancer.
