As the leaves turn golden and the air becomes crisp, it’s time to adapt your baby’s skincare routine to the changing seasons. Fall brings cooler temperatures and drier air, which can impact your little one’s delicate skin. Proper skincare is essential to keep your baby’s skin soft, healthy, and protected. Learn more with Women’s Health and Menopause Center.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize:

Cooler temperatures can lead to dry, flaky skin. Opt for a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep your baby’s skin hydrated. Apply it after bath time and whenever their skin feels dry.

Gentle Cleansing:

Use a mild, hypoallergenic baby soap or cleanser during bath time. Limit baths to no more than 10 minutes, and ensure the water is comfortably warm, not hot. Excessive bathing can strip the skin of natural oils.

Watch for Skin Sensitivities:

Be vigilant for any signs of skin sensitivities or allergies, such as redness, rashes, or itching. If you notice any concerns, consult your pediatrician.

Be Mindful of Allergens:

Fall allergens like pollen and mold can irritate your baby’s skin. Keep windows closed on high pollen days, and regularly clean and dust your baby’s nursery.

We Are Here To Help You:

Heart disease is often thought of as a predominantly male health issue, but it is equally important for women to pay attention to their heart health. In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women worldwide. However, the symptoms and risk factors for heart disease in women can differ from those in men, leading to underdiagnosis and delayed treatment. In this blog, we will highlight the importance of women’s heart health, discuss common signs and risk factors, and explore preventive measures for maintaining a healthy heart.

Understanding the Signs:

Chest Discomfort: While chest pain is a common symptom for both men and women, women may experience different sensations such as tightness, pressure, or burning rather than sharp pain. This discomfort may not be severe or prolonged but can still signal an underlying heart condition.

Shortness of Breath: Unexplained shortness of breath, especially during everyday activities or rest, may indicate a problem with the heart. This symptom is often dismissed as fatigue or aging, leading to delayed diagnosis.

Fatigue and Weakness: Persistent fatigue, exhaustion, or weakness that affects your ability to perform daily tasks should not be ignored. These symptoms can be indicative of reduced blood flow to the heart.

Pain in the Jaw, Neck, Back, or Arms: Women may experience pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, back, or arms during a heart attack or angina. This pain can be intermittent or chronic and should not be overlooked.

Nausea and Indigestion: Some women may mistake symptoms such as nausea, indigestion, or stomach pain for digestive issues, but they can also be related to heart problems. Pay attention to any unexplained gastrointestinal discomfort, especially when accompanied by other signs.

Recognizing Risk Factors:

Age: The risk of heart disease increases with age, and women over 55 years are more susceptible. However, it’s important to note that heart disease can occur at any age, so vigilance is necessary throughout life.

Family History: A family history of heart disease, particularly in close relatives such as parents or siblings, can increase your risk. Be aware of your family’s medical history and discuss it with your healthcare provider.

High Blood Pressure: Elevated blood pressure, or hypertension, is a significant risk factor for heart disease. Regularly monitor your blood pressure and take necessary steps to keep it within a healthy range.

High Cholesterol: Elevated levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides can contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries, leading to heart disease. Get your cholesterol levels checked regularly and make lifestyle modifications or take medication if necessary.

Diabetes: Women with diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease. Proper management of blood sugar levels and regular medical check-ups are essential for maintaining heart health.

Preventive Measures:

Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle: Follow a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit processed foods, sugary beverages, and excessive sodium intake. Engage in regular physical activity, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.

Maintain a Healthy Weight: Obesity and excess weight put strain on the heart. Maintain a healthy weight through a combination of balanced eating habits and regular exercise.

Manage Stress: Chronic stress can impact heart health. Find healthy coping mechanisms such as exercise, meditation, yoga, or engaging in hobbies to manage stress effectively.

When most women think of menopause, they think of freedom from periods. Imagine all the money you’ll save on tampons or pads and how much easier life will be when you don’t have to deal with bloody messes each month.

“If my period is supposed to stop, then why is it coming every two weeks?”

That’s a great question. It’s most likely because you aren’t quite in menopause yet. You may be entering a stage called perimenopause.

Perimenopause can begin in your mid to late 40s. It’s the step that comes before menopause. You may notice symptoms like:

Hot flashes

Lower sex drive

Breast tenderness

Fatigue

Vaginal dryness

Your hormones are beginning to change, which can affect your menstrual cycle. If you look forward to having no periods, then I have some bad news. It may get worse before it gets better.

Perimenopause can cause irregular cycles. Your estrogen and progesterone levels used to fluctuate consistently when you were younger. As you get older, they become more erratic, which can lead to unpredictable cycles.

There may be less time between periods. Some women also notice heavier or lighter flows as well as a worse premenstrual syndrome.

The perimenopause phase can last for up to 10 years. Sorry ladies, we just can’t catch a break when it comes to our reproductive systems.

Figuring out whether you are in perimenopause or menopause is easy. You are in menopause once you have not had a period for at least a year. This usually happens between ages 45 and 55.

You don’t have to cope with perimenopause symptoms alone. Contact Women’s Health and Menopause Center to schedule an appointment and find out how to make the transition easier.

Your urinary tract serves a very important purpose. It is responsible for removing waste from the body. This system is susceptible to many medical conditions. That’s why you should understand how to take care of it and when to seek the advice of an OB/GYN. What can you do to keep your bladder in good working order?

Drink Enough Water – Liquids are needed to keep the urinary tract moving. Make sure you get enough liquids, especially water. The average person should drink between six and eight 8-ounce glasses daily.

Limit Caffeine and Alcohol Intake – Caffeine, alcohol, and sugary soda are not good for your health. You can enjoy them once in a while but do so in moderation.

Eat High-Fiber Foods – High-fiber foods are a part of a nutritious diet. They prevent constipation, which can cause problems with urinary continence and bladder control.

Manage Your Weight – A healthy weight is important for your entire body. Being overweight can cause hormonal imbalances, accidental urine leakage, and type 2 diabetes.

Get Regular Exercise – Getting a regular workout can help lower your risk of bladder problems as well as many other conditions.

Exercise Your Pelvic Floor Muscle – Make Kegels part of your regular routine. Doing them daily can strengthen muscles which provide you better control and prevent urine leakage.

Urinate After Sex – It may not sound appealing, but always urinate after having sex. This removes bacteria that entered the urethra during intercourse.

If you have questions or problems with your urinary tract health, let us know. Contact Women’s Health today for an appointment.

If you are pregnant or plan to conceive, then you have likely heard the word “obstetrician” at least once before. This type of doctor specializes in medical care for pregnant women. Obstetricians will help you through each stage in pregnancy as well as delivery. Their expertise also includes prenatal and postnatal care.

What Does an Obstetrician Do?

The knowledge of an obstetrician is essential to a healthy pregnancy and delivery. This type of specialist understands the complexities of high-risk pregnancies. They can perform caesareans and interventions. Our Women’s Health doctors also have trained in gynecology, so they know women’s reproductive health.

If you are considered a high-risk, then you will need to see an obstetrician more often to monitor progress. Your OB/GYN will track the baby’s growth and position and will also refer you for routine tests and check-ups. They can also prepare you for labor and the birthing process.

What Happens During My First Appointment with an Obstetrician?

Your first visit with an obstetrician is an opportunity to meet someone who will be essential to you and your baby’s health. They will do an overall health check to look for any signs that could affect your pregnancy. They will also discuss routine tests, necessary vitamins and a personalized health plan for you and your baby-to-be.

You should be prepared to ask about costs and care throughout each stage. Your obstetrician may also recommend lifestyle changes that are good for you and your child. These may include things like not drinking alcohol and not smoking.

Finding an Obstetrician

You should look for a medical professional who makes you feel comfortable and confident in their abilities. Call our all women obstetrics staff today to schedule an appointment or consultation. Contact us.

When most people think about birth and renewal, they usually think about spring with its flowers and new baby animals. While that sounds charming, it’s actually winter that is the best time to try to conceive.

Excessive Heat Affects Sperm Production

While the rest of the body may feel the chill of winter, sperm are quite happy without the excessive heat. Men are advised to avoid heat around the testicles when trying to conceive. A lower temperature is needed for optimum sperm production. If it’s too warm, it can slow production and cause a higher number of abnormal sperm.

The ideal environment for sperm is four degrees cooler than the body. A number of things can cause that temperature to go up, like:

Wearing briefs instead of loose boxers

Wearing tight-fitting clothing

Sitting with a warm laptop on your lap

Relaxing in a hot tub or sauna

Fever and other health issues

Higher Testosterone Means Higher Fertility

Testosterone levels are at their highest during the fall and winter months. That leads to a rising libido. A stronger sex drive combined with more testosterone means higher fertility and a better chance at conceiving. Studies found that sperm concentration is lowest in August through October and then picks up again as the temperature cools off.

Birth patterns also prove that winter is a good time to make babies. November and December were identified as the most fertile months, with the highest number of births nine months later. Trying to conceive this winter? Schedule an appointment with your Women’s Health OB/GYN.

Despite the importance of mammogram screening, some women choose to skip it. Read on about common breast cancer myths.

Mammogram Myth 1: You Don’t Need One if You Have No Family History

90% of breast cancer cases are not genetic. That means your family history will likely not influence whether or not you develop the disease. Do not rely on genetics as the only factor that will determine whether or not you end up with breast cancer.

Mammogram Myth 2: You Don’t Need One if You Aren’t Experiencing Symptoms

Cancer doesn’t always show its hand right away. You can have it with no obvious symptoms. This is especially true early on when cancer tends to be in its most treatable state.

Mammogram Myth 3: Screenings Will Expose You to Dangerous Radiation

As long as you go to a certified facility such as Women’s Health, mammograms are safe. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sets guidelines for safe levels of radiation during screenings. We are exposed to background radiation each day. A mammogram exposes patients to an amount that’s equal to around two months’ worth of everyday background radiation.

Mammogram Myth 4: My Internist Didn’t Mention It, So I Can’t Schedule a Screening

Just because your internist didn’t directly state that you need a mammogram doesn’t mean you shouldn’t schedule one. Every woman should have an annual screening performed. Your internist may assume that you regularly see your OB/GYN and have an appointment scheduled.

Mammogram Myth 5: My Last Mammogram Was Normal So I Can Skip This Year

A lot can change in the body over the course of 12 months. Just because your last mammogram was normal doesn’t mean you can skip the next one. Keep up with your annual screenings to give yourself the best chances for early detection.

Contact your Women’s Health OB/GYN to schedule a mammogram, now conveniently located right in their West Bloomfield office. Your OB/GYN can answer your questions about the procedure and breast cancer prevention.
