Menopause is a transformative journey that brings about many changes in a woman’s life. While we often associate menopause with hormonal fluctuations and hot flashes, it’s important to remember that this stage can also impact our physical health. One key aspect is maintaining mobility and ensuring that we stay active and fit as our bodies go through this transition. Explore some valuable tips on staying mobile and active during menopause with us.

Tips on Staying Mobile During Menopause:

Find an Activity You Enjoy: The key to sticking with an exercise routine is to choose an activity you genuinely enjoy. It could be dancing, swimming, hiking, yoga, or walking. Doing what you enjoy makes the activity nothing but a pleasure.

Stay Consistent: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days per week. Reap the benefits of exercise by staying consistent.

Prioritize Strength Training: Muscle loss is common during menopause, so incorporating strength training exercises into your routine is essential. This can be as simple as using resistance bands or lifting weights.

Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is crucial during exercise, as it helps regulate body temperature and prevent overheating, which can be a concern during menopause.

Listen to Your Body: Be mindful of how your body responds to exercise. If you experience pain or discomfort, it’s essential to adjust your routine and consult us if needed.

Warm-Up and Cool-Down: Always start your workout with a warm-up and finish with a cool-down. This helps prevent injuries and can help reduce muscle pain.

In recent years, the world of sports has witnessed a remarkable surge in the participation and achievements of female athletes. These incredible women have shattered barriers, defied stereotypes, and inspired generations with their remarkable performances. However, it is crucial to recognize that achieving success in sports goes beyond physical prowess. Empowering female athletes requires a holistic approach that prioritizes both performance and well-being. In this blog, we will explore the importance of balancing performance and well-being and provide actionable tips for female athletes to excel both on and off the field.

Prioritize Physical and Mental Health:

For female athletes, maintaining optimal physical and mental health is paramount. Focus on fueling your body with a well-balanced diet that provides the necessary nutrients for performance and recovery. Stay hydrated and ensure adequate rest and sleep to support your body’s healing and growth processes. Additionally, pay attention to your mental well-being by practicing self-care, stress management techniques, and seeking support when needed. Taking care of your overall health will enhance your performance and longevity in sports.

Embrace Strength Training:

Strength training is often overlooked or underestimated by female athletes due to misconceptions about becoming overly muscular. However, incorporating strength training into your routine offers numerous benefits. It helps build strong bones, improves muscular strength and endurance, enhances stability and injury prevention, and boosts overall athletic performance. Consult with a qualified strength and conditioning coach to design a program tailored to your specific sport and goals.

Develop a Supportive Network:

Surrounding yourself with a supportive network is crucial for success in sports. Seek out coaches, trainers, teammates, and mentors who believe in your abilities and provide guidance and encouragement. Build relationships with individuals who understand the unique challenges faced by female athletes and can offer guidance on managing those challenges. Connecting with like-minded athletes through sports clubs, teams, or online communities can also provide a sense of belonging and inspiration.

Set Realistic Goals:

Setting realistic and attainable goals is essential for sustained motivation and progress. Narrow big goals into smaller ones and focus on achieving them by starting small. This approach allows you to measure your progress and celebrate victories along the way. Remember that setbacks and failures are part of the journey, and they provide opportunities for growth and learning. Stay focused on your personal journey and avoid comparing yourself to others.

Advocate for Gender Equality:

Female athletes have played a pivotal role in advancing gender equality in sports, but the journey is far from over. Use your platform and voice to advocate for equal opportunities, fair treatment, and representation in sports. Challenge stereotypes and inspire younger generations to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Support organizations and initiatives that promote gender equality in sports, and actively engage in conversations about the importance of empowering female athletes.

Find Balance and Enjoyment:

While striving for excellence in sports is important, it’s equally vital to find balance and enjoyment in your athletic pursuits. Avoid excessive pressure and perfectionism that can lead to burnout or mental health issues. Remember why you started playing sports in the first place and reconnect with the joy and passion that drive you. Take breaks, engage in hobbies outside of sports, and cultivate a well-rounded life that nourishes your soul.

Conclusion:

Empowering female athletes involves nurturing both their performance and overall well-being. We are here to help with that. Visit our contact page to book an appointment with an OB/GYN expert. Many women gave improved their health because they requested our services.
If you have chosen to have a baby, it is normal if it takes a few months or more. However, you can maximize your chances of getting pregnant by taking a few steps.

Target ovulation

Ovulation is the event where a mature egg is released from the ovary. For women with regular 28-day cycles, it also means it occurs two weeks before your period.

Your fertile period is about seven days before ovulation, and it is best to have sex during these days. A released egg is only viable for about 24 hours, meaning it has to be fertilized by a sperm within this period for you to get pregnant. Sperm can survive in a woman’s reproductive tract for up to four to five days. So, it’s best to have sex in the days before and during ovulation.

If you have irregular cycles, you may try the ovulation predictor kit. This kit detects luteinizing hormone (LH), which surges just before ovulating. You can start checking from day nine. Once you get a positive result, have sex that day and for the next few days to increase your chances of getting pregnant.

You may also check for cervical mucus changes. Days before ovulation, your cervical mucus increases and becomes thin and slippery. Also, avoid lubricants that can interfere with sperm motility and viability.

Get and stay healthy

To get and stay healthy, you should do the following:

See a doctor, preferably an obstetrician, if you have pre-existing health problems.

Get screened for genetic diseases.

Get into a healthy weight

Start on a healthy diet

Cut back on soda and caffeine.

Exercise regularly

Eliminate alcohol

Quit smoking

Start taking prenatal vitamins as soon as you decide to get pregnant (at least 400 mcg of folic acid each day)

Manage stress

A miscarriage is when the fetus dies before twenty weeks of pregnancy. If a miscarriage is going to happen, it will usually occur within the first trimester of pregnancy. There are several causes for a miscarriage to happen. Some are from natural causes or something going wrong bodily within the mother and baby. Some miscarriages are brought on by stress or induced by trauma to the mother’s body.

Depending on how far along the pregnancy is, the symptoms of a miscarriage will vary. Sometimes a woman can miscarry before she is confirmed to even be pregnant. The symptoms of a miscarriage include but are not limited to heavy spotting, vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, cramping, back pain. A miscarriage can be scary, traumatic, and emotionally devastating.

There are several causes and reasons as to why a miscarriage occurs. Abnormalities within chromosomes will immediately induce a miscarriage. Chromosome abnormalities such as molar pregnancy, partial molar pregnancy, intrauterine fetal demise will immediately cause miscarriage. Hormones, street drugs, alcohol, abuse, and tobacco are also major causes of miscarriage.

There are different types of miscarriages. Most miscarriages happen because there is a problem with the pregnancy, so you cannot prevent them. There are steps that can be taken by a woman that will ensure the odds of a successful healthy pregnancy, and reduce the chance for a miscarriage. Not participating in any form of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco will greatly reduce this risk. Also avoiding physical abuse, overexertion, and stressful situations will help. Getting exercise regularly, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight will play a vital role in reducing the chance for miscarriage as well.

Physical exercise will not increase your risk of low birth weight, miscarriage, or early delivery. It is vital that you discuss exercise during pregnancy with your obstetrician. If your doctor gives you approval for exercise, you will need to discuss what specific types of exercise are safe for you to do.

There are some conditions or circumstances that make exercise during pregnancy unsafe. Severe anemia is one of these conditions. Anemia is when there are not enough healthy red blood cells in the blood. This will cause reduced oxygen flow to the organs in the body. Reduced oxygen will compromise anyone and everyone’s wellbeing, especially pregnant women.

Women who are pregnant with twins or triplets should not be doing any form of physical exercise. Specific types of heart and lung disease also make exercise during pregnancy unsafe and risky. Once the water has broken and labor is approaching, it is dangerous to exercise for obvious reasons.

Exercise during pregnancy has some risks for those who are not careful, but there are many benefits. A boost in mood and emotional wellbeing is just one great benefit to exercise during pregnancy. Faster postpartum recovery and lower BMI are also associated with exercise during pregnancy.

Thirty minutes of moderate exercise every day for pregnant or expecting mothers is more than enough. Swimming and water aerobics are the best forms of exercise for pregnant mothers. Swimming will help an expecting mother with nausea, sciatic pain, and puffy ankles. Walking and gentle prenatal yoga are also suggested.

Managing Memory During Menopause

Menopause isn’t just a thing that happens to your reproductive system. It brings on changes in your entire body – including your brain.

Brain fog is a very real symptom. A 2013 study found that around 60% of middle-aged women experienced concentration and cognitive difficulties.

Different factors can affect brain fog. Researchers identified connections between vascular symptoms and insomnia and a change in cognitive ability. Women going through their first year of menopause seemed to have the most noticeable changes concerning attention, memory, motor function, and verbal learning.

There’s no reason to worry too much, though. The data also shows that the problem is usually temporary. Women in one study found that their memory improved over time.

Forgetting basic things can be frustrating. There are techniques you can use to overcome brain fog (or at least lessen its effects). Start by living a healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet, enough rest, and exercise.

Engage in brain exercises. These can be fun activities, like crossword puzzles or Sudoku. You can even enroll in a class or learn a new language or instrument. Treat your brain like a muscle and keep it toned!

Try to account for memory hiccups by keeping a pen and paper nearby. You can jot down notes, like what you needed to buy at the store, so you don’t come home without it. There are even smartphone notetaking apps that can help (and who leaves the house without their phone these days?).

When Is Brain Fog Something to Worry About?

Brain fog is normal. However, you should be aware of the symptoms of dementia. There can be some overlap, so it’s important to not dismiss changes without consulting a doctor. Contact Women’s Health to schedule an appointment.

Deciding to have a baby can be exciting! It can also be overwhelming. Some couples are not sure where to begin when they want to conceive. Others may have difficulty with fertility. There are many things to consider before you begin trying for a baby. The following tips will help you get started.

Talk to Your Doctor First

Your OB/GYN should be consulted before you attempt to get pregnant. They can discuss risk factors, genetic testing, lifestyle changes, and more. They can also review any medications you take to ensure they are safe to continue taking during pregnancy. Your doctor will most likely also recommend taking prenatal vitamins months in advance.

Understand the Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle can vary for some women. Some are very regular, while others are not. Understanding this process will help tremendously with conception. The cycle begins on the first day bright red blood appears and can last between 21 and 35 days on average. This will affect the timing of conception, so you need to know what’s happening internally to determine when to have sex.

Plan to Have Sex – A Lot

If you want to have a baby, then you need to have sex. Some couples get lucky and conceive quickly. Others must try for a while, so plan to have sex often. The best time is during ovulation.

Studies show maximum fertility occurs 3 to 5 days prior plus the day of ovulation. That means you should plan to have sex 1 to 2 days prior to ovulation. Doctors usually suggest having intercourse every other day during the week before ovulation or after the end of your period.

An OB/GYN can help you learn more about getting pregnant and staying healthy. Give Women’s Health a call to schedule an appointment.

Approximately 6.1 million American women experience infertility. That equals around 10% of females in the U.S. who are in their childbearing years. Out of those, around 25% are infertile for multiple reasons. Common causes can be age, blocked tubes, or STDs. Even women who have no medical conditions can have difficulty conceiving. So how do you know what is normal and when you should talk to a fertility specialist?

Are You Timing Pregnancy Attempts Correctly?

Timing is crucial when trying to conceive. You should understand the menstrual cycle to know the optimum time for ovulation. A woman is most fertile between days 11 and 21 of her cycle. This is when ovulation typically occurs. There may be variation, so it’s important to pay attention to what’s happening with your body.

How Long Have You Been Trying to Get Pregnant?

Pregnancy isn’t guaranteed to happen the first time you have sex, even if you time ovulation. For many couples, it’s a process that can last months or longer. If you are under age 35 with no medical conditions, then you will likely be expected to try for a year before considering fertility treatment.

If you are over age 35 with no medical conditions, then you may be advised to talk to a fertility specialist after six months of trying. Fertility declines as a woman ages, so it may be harder to conceive if you are in this age group or older.

Know About Fertility Before You Try

Many factors are at play when trying to get pregnant. You should speak and be examined by a Women’s Health OB/GYN before you begin. We can provide advice and do any screenings or tests that could help you understand any challenges you may face as well as any risk factors for your baby. Contact us today to schedule an appointment in our West Bloomfield offices.
