Pregnancy After 35

Pregnancy after age 35 is increasingly common. Most patients in this age group can still have healthy pregnancies, especially with early and consistent prenatal care.

Age is one factor your obstetrician considers, but it does not define your entire pregnancy.

Why Is Age 35 Discussed?

Fertility gradually declines with age, and certain pregnancy risks become more common. These may include:

Chromosome-related conditions

Miscarriage

Gestational diabetes

High blood pressure

Preeclampsia

Placental concerns

Cesarean delivery

Preterm birth

These risks do not mean a complication will occur. Your individual health, pregnancy history, blood pressure, weight, medications, and other factors also matter.

Prenatal Genetic Screening

Prenatal genetic screening may be offered to every pregnant patient, regardless of age. Options can include:

Cell-free DNA screening

First-trimester screening

Carrier screening

Diagnostic testing such as chorionic villus sampling

Amniocentesis

Screening estimates the chance of certain conditions. It does not provide a definitive diagnosis. Your provider can explain the benefits, limitations, and timing of each option.

Ultrasound and Fetal Evaluation

A first-trimester ultrasound may help confirm the due date and pregnancy location. A detailed anatomy ultrasound is generally performed during the second trimester.

ACOG recommends offering a detailed fetal anatomy ultrasound for pregnancies in patients older than 35. Additional fetal monitoring may be considered later in pregnancy based on age and other medical factors.

Managing Health Conditions

Conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, or autoimmune disorders may influence prenatal care.

Your obstetrician may recommend:

Additional prenatal visits

Medication adjustments

Low-dose aspirin for selected patients

Glucose screening

Growth ultrasounds

Blood pressure monitoring

Antenatal testing later in pregnancy

Never begin aspirin or stop a prescription medication without medical guidance.

Healthy Steps Before and During Pregnancy

Helpful steps include:

Starting prenatal care early

Taking a prenatal vitamin

Avoiding smoking and alcohol

Eating a balanced diet

Staying active when medically appropriate

Attending recommended appointments

Reporting concerning symptoms promptly

Women’s Health and Menopause Center provides individualized obstetric and prenatal care for each stage of pregnancy.

Expectant parents may also benefit from the practice’s prenatal birthing classes, which cover labor, delivery, recovery, feeding, and early life at home.

Age should guide appropriate care, not create unnecessary fear. Schedule an appointment to discuss pregnancy planning or prenatal care after 35.
